Promotion Requirements

Participating in the promotion ceremony is not a right, but an earned privilege. It is the celebration of studentís achievements from kindergarten through 8th grade. Therefore, for their 8th grade year, students must meet each of the following requirements to be included in the celebration of accomplishment; the promotion ceremony:

-Have attendance of 90% or better. (no more than a 20 daysí average of absences for the school year) Tardiness of five times in any given class will equal one absence.
-Have passed 90%, (no more than two Fs during the four quarters of the school term) of their subjects based on quarter grades.
-Have no involvement in drugs or other illegal substances (tobacco, etc.) on campus.
-Have no more than two major referrals to the office resulting in an administrator assigned consequence.
-Any student having more than three tardy will not qualify for the perfect attendance award.
-Owe no fines.

Any exception to this policy will require the majority approval of the studentís teachers and SMS administration. The parent may initiate this appeal process.

Students transferring from other schools will be held to the same standards and will provide documentation from their previous school attesting to their eligibility to participate in the ceremony.

Safford Middle School dress code standards are expected for promotion exercises.

ADE Decision Regarding Days Missed Due to the Hailstorm and Flooding

Safford Unified School District has received notice from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and the Superintendent of Public Instruction approving a modified calendar for the District for the 2016-17 school year, due to the days of school lost because of hailstorm and flood damage. The District and ADE have worked together closely during this process and we are pleased with the results. Below is the reply we received from ADE and the State Superintendentís office:

ďGreat news! The Superintendent of Public Instruction has approved the Safford Unified School Districtís modified calendar for the 2017 School Year based on the information provided to the Arizona Department of Education in writing and emails along with the verbal communication we had with you on 10/24/16.

Again, thank you for alerting us to the Districtís hardship and working with us to ensure that all of the Districtís students receive the required number of instructional hours.

We wish you the best in continuing to recover from the storm damage.Ē

Therefore, Safford Schools is pleased to inform all Staff, Students, Parents, and Community members of the modified calendar for the 2016-17 school year due to the severe hailstorm and flooding which caused schools to close from October 12, 2016 through October 21, 2016.

Schools are required to attend a specific number of days per year, as well as a specific number of hours per year. In certain emergencies schools may petition the ADE to excuse the required days, but must meet the minimum required seat hours. SUSD requested to be excused from having to meet the required number of school days and also requested approval for the following in order to meet the required seat hours, and approval has been granted:

School will be in session the following days to make up for seat hours missed:
--Monday, April 17, 2017 will be a full day of school (it was originally scheduled to be a no school day).
--Friday, May 19, 2017 will be a full day of school for grads K - 8 (it was originally scheduled to be an early release day).
--Friday, May 19, 2017 will be a school day for Safford High School.
--Grades 4 - 6, in order to meet the required number of seat hours will not have scheduled morning recess for the remainder of the year.

Once again, we are very grateful to the State School Superintendent and the Arizona Department of Education for their care and concern for Safford Schools during this time of change and trial.

Early Release Fridays

SMS will now have early release for professional development every Friday. Students will be released at 11:41. Transportation will be provided at that time. Students may also be provided a sack lunch to take with them as they are dismissed. Students will be released at the normal 2:58 release time the first two Friday's of every semester.

Sport Participation Fee

Students participating in Athletics will pay $30 per sport. Fees are due before the first games are played.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, community members, and staff who so generously made a tax credit contribution to our school during the year. Your generosity has made it possible for our students to upgrade sports uniforms and equipment. Some of our students will also be able to take field trips that they otherwise could not go on if it weren't for the kind people of this community.
You can come in any time during the year to make your contribution. You can donate up to $400 if you file a joint return, or $200 if you file single. Remember that you get back every dollar that you contribute at the time you file your state income tax. When you make a tax credit donation, not only does the school benefit, but you benefit also. Keep in mind that you determine which school activity gets your donation. To make it as simple as possible for you, the forms for making your donation are available in all school offices or at the administration office.

Arrival of Students

We remind parents that students should not be in school earlier than 7:15 unless they're meeting with a teacher. We want our students to be safe at all times and our courtyard supervision does not begin until 7:15 a.m.. Also, students should go home right after dismissal after school, at 2:58, unless they have practice, games or need to be in a teacher's classroom. We appreciate your child's and your cooperation.
