| Safford Middle School's Laptop Initiative
After three years of research, grant writing, staff and student training, Safford Middle School is becoming a one to one laptop school. Every student at SMS will be issued a laptop computer to use in their classes and at home. This was made possible through a generous grant from Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold, as well as from The Arizona Department of Education. Over two years ago, the SUSD Governing Board gave the go ahead for Safford Middle School to pursue the goal of becoming a one to one 21st Century School. SMS has been awarded over $500,000 in competitive grants to fund this program.
The laptop initiative will increase student motivation and engagement in the classroom, bringing the world to students in a universal way that was before difficult to achieve. Students will be expected to collaborate with each other and with other schools on project based activities, using technology to teach the AZ State Standards in a creative and innovative way.
Congratulations to the students and staff of Safford Middle School on this monumental achievement.

| Arrival of Students
We remind parents that students should not be in school earlier than 7:15 unless they're meeting with a teacher. We want our students to be safe at all times and our courtyard supervision does not begin until 7:15 a.m.. Also, students should go home right after dismissal after school, at 2:58, unless they have practice, games or need to be in a teacher's classroom. We appreciate your child's and your cooperation.

TAX CREDIT DONATIONS
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, community members, and staff who so generously made a tax credit contribution to our school during the year 2010. Your generosity has made it possible for the girls' basketball teams to get new warm-up jackets and shirts. Some of our students will also be able to take field trips that they otherwise could not go on if it weren't for the kind people of this community. You can come in any time during the year to make your contribution. You can donate up to $400 if you file a joint return, or $250 if you file single. Remember that you get back every dollar that you contribute at the time you file your state income tax. When you make a tax credit donation, not only does the school benefit, but you benefit also. Keep in mind that you determine which school activity gets your donation. To make it as simple as possible for you, the forms for making your donation are available in all school offices or at the administration office.
