Safford Attends the 51st Annual FBLA State Leadership Conference Future Business Leaders of America
The 51st Annual Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference was held in Tucson, AZ at the Westin La Paloma Resort on April 1st through the 3rd. The goal of this event is to give students the understanding of future business that they may partake in, and the students learn a variety of different business techniques. Throughout the State Leadership Conference, students are involved in over 50 different competitions where they are able to express their business knowledge, compete in performance events on teams and individually, as well as write business plans, and utilize their computer skills and techniques. HERMAN ANDREWS, JR., ARIZONA WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEAR
With over 503 victories over the course of his coaching years, Herman Andrews, Jr.—Wrestling Coach of the Year for the State of Arizona—has the opportunity to become the National Coach of the Year. “I’m in the wrestling room everyday except Friday, preparing kids of all ages to not only gain confidence in themselves, but to help shape them into their best self as an athlete and an individual,” expresses Herman Andrews. “To be the Arizona State Coach of the Year is an outstanding reward. It's really cool to see that all this hard work is not going unnoticed. Being nominated for the National Coach of the year is just awesome! I don’t know how to put it any other way.”
With potential or be the National Coach, Herman Andrews, Jr. keeps his goals high, but reasonable. “I want to become the winningest coach in Arizona. Not only that, but I want to do it the fastest and with the best winning percentage.” So far Andrews has roughly 80 more victories to accumulate, but is on track at getting there the quickest.
As any great athlete would know, it takes dedication and perseverance to dominate at the highest level. Little do people know, coaches have to set their priorities straight also. While being in the wrestling room daily, including the off season, Andrews is also a Track Coach at Safford High School. Going straight from work, to track practice, Andrews makes time to coach young athletes from the age of 5 to 18. He makes this time for both the learning opportunity and to provide kids with a stable program that will make a difference in their life as well as the future.
While athletes prepare to be the best, a coach has to also. With the advantage of coming from a family of honorable coaches—his father Herman (BB) Andrews, Norma Bellamy, Ken Guzik, and many others—Herman doesn’t let their legacy define him, but rather guide him into leaving his own legacy as a wrestling coach. Coach Andrews prepares for every meet by going over pervious years film, stats, and notes he’s taken. He has an eye for noticing hitches or bad habits that allow his wrestlers to have an advantage by breaking down their opponent’s tendencies. Herman is a firm believer in basic wrestling, “The more basic, the better,” is his motto. “I prepare my team to become better by conditioning them daily. Some don’t believe in that, but I do. The wrestler is the one who has to go onto the mat and dominate. When the round gets tough and you’re seconds away from pinning your opponent, that extra core workout that was done the day before will make the difference in your performance.” Outsiders may say that Coach Herman Andrews, Jr. is too tough, but in all reality he is making a difference in both young and old athlete’s lives, while doing what he loves in an honorable way.
Herman Andrews, Jr. will find out if he will be named the National Coach of the year at the end of June.
