Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members,

Reconstruction has begun on all campuses with the exception of Lafe Nelson. The administrative team met with representatives from AZ Risk Retention Trust, Comprehensive Risk Services, Sagebrush Restoration, and the AZ School Facilities Board and were given an update on progress thus far. We would like to share the latest information with you.

Lafe Nelson students in grades K-2 (210 students) will be attending Ruth Powell School on their time schedule 8:15-2:15. They will still have the same teacher they had at Lafe Nelson.

Lafe Nelson students in grades 3-4 (162 students) will be attending Dorothy Stinson School on their time schedule 8:00-2:00. They will still have the same teacher they had at Lafe Nelson.

Lafe Nelson students in grades 5-6 (151 students) will be attending Safford Middle School on the original LNS time schedule 8:10-2:10. They will still have the same teacher they had at Lafe Nelson.

Special Education services will continue and special education teachers will not change.

At this time, students will be picked up at their regular bus stops at their regular time.

Breakfast and lunch will be served on each campus, so there will be no change in food services.

Please continue to come back to this webpage for the most recent update.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to prepare our schools for Oct. 24 restart date.

Safford Schools would like to thank the community for the many calls we have already received offering support and help. Please support those around you who may have experienced devastation from this storm.

We have received clarification of Arizona revised state statute 15-901. This says that the first 10% of absences, 18, days, are excused if they fall under one of the excused categories. The change to the law states that after the 10%, 18 days, any absence for any reason after that is considered unexcused. For every 5 days after the 18th absence, paperwork will be filed turning your child's name into probation in accordance with truancy policies.
When your child is absent you must call in with 48 hours for it to be excused. You will no longer be able to in a week after your child has been gone to excuse the absence. If it is not called in within 48 hours of the absence, we will not go back and change an unexcused to an excused. All of this is specifically stated in the state law.

ALL parents/guardians of Safford Unified School District students there are changes to the Transportation Policies that will be put into effect at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

In order for your child to ride a bus to/from school, you must come into the Transportation Office with your child, view a video, and sign all necessary paperwork.

The Transportation Office
1185 S. 14th Ave.

This new Transportation Policy is in place to help educate everyone on the importance of safety on school buses. At Safford Unified Schools, we are striving to create a safe, healthy environment for everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the Transportation Office at (928) 348-7091 or (928) 348-7080.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Phillip Nelson
Director of Transportation
