Superintendent Message

It is a pleasure to share some of my thoughts about the outstanding education provided for students by our highly trained and dedicated staff. Over 60% of our professional staff hold advanced degrees and a number have received state and national recognition for their accomplishments. New teachers to the District receive extensive training and support through our Teacher Induction Program, Professional Mentorships, and ongoing staff development. The staff development program in Safford Schools is recognized as being one of the finest in Arizona. Our goal is to place outstanding and caring educators in all of our classrooms so that every student who attends Safford Schools receives a quality education.

We provide a variety of programs to help all students meet or exceed academic standards. Emphasis is placed on early childhood education through our preschool programs located at Mt. Graham High School, Safford High School, Dorothy Stinson School and Lafe Nelson School. The major goal in our primary grades is to provide the instruction necessary to ensure all students can read at grade level by the end of third grade. Lafe Nelson School is recognized as a Reading First School and serves as a model for a scientific, researched based delivery system for the teaching of reading.

Other programs unique to the Safford School District include our Adult Education Program offered at Mt. Graham High School where adults can earn a high school diploma, the Safford High School Academy, which offers opportunities for students to earn college credit, and a partnership with the Gila Institute for Technology that extends and enhances career and technical education choices.

Special attention has been made to provide parents and students with choices to meet individual needs. No attendance zones exist in the Safford District. Parents may choose to send their children to any of our schools. Our two high schools, Mt. Graham High School and Safford High School, offer two different approaches for educating students. Students may attend more than one school at a time to take classes to keep them challenged and interested. Safford Middle School serves as an excellent transition from the elementary grades into high school.

In addition to our varied academic choices, our schools also provide students a number of activities through our extracurricular programs. The schools partner with the City of Safford to provide recreational activities and competitive programs at the elementary levels. Safford Middle School and Safford High School have an excellent sports program that has received numerous state awards. A variety of clubs at these schools allow students to extend their learning and service opportunities.

Safford Schools has expanded its Fine Arts Program by hiring a full-time music teacher for each of the elementary schools, providing a Strings Program beginning at the third grade, offering band from 5th grade on, and extending vocal, visual arts and drama classes at the middle and secondary levels.

On a personal note, I am grateful for the fine education that my children received, and now my grandchildren are receiving in Safford Schools. It is my commitment to help all of our parents feel the same as I do.
