Sports Fest 2010
The 3rd Annual Safford Unified School District Special Education Sports Fest was held Friday, March 26th at the Safford High School Track and Field. Mr. John Uy and Ms. Terral Archer co-coordinated this event again this year.
The Special Education students from Ruth Powell School and Dorothy Stinson School competed in a track and field event designed for all students to feel like winners. The students competed in the 25 meter walk, the 25 and 100 meter dashes, the standing broad jump and the softball throw.
The students began the Sports Fest by parading as two teams; the RPS Blue Bulldog Team, and the DSS White Garfield Gang Team to the SHS track and field. They held their team banners high and chanted their cheers to patriotic music as they marched from Ruth Powell School.
The Opening Ceremonies included an Athletes Oath: “We Are Brave in the Attempt”, and a Welcome and Opening by Mrs. Kristen Walker the Special Education Director in the Safford Schools. This was followed by an Inspirational Message by Senator Sylvia Allen who graciously attended our event this year. Senator Allen remained throughout the event cheering and congratulating students as they crossed the finish line for each race. She was very much a joy to have at our event.
The Awarding Ceremonies celebrated each child’s as being “A Winner.” They each received a blue ribbon and a beautiful Certificate of Participation.
We are looking forward to many years of the Safford Unified School District Special Education Sports Fest. Mr. Uy is to be given a great deal of appreciation for creating such a joyful and wonderful program for our students. We would also like to thank our Instructional Assistance who put in many hours of time to help us prepare for this event.
