Principally Speaking
It is not often that people can brag about how much they love their jobs. I, however, do it on a daily basis. The first thing I noticed when I visited Mt. Graham were the smiles on everyone’s faces, students and faculty alike. It is nice to see that it continues after I have been here for a year. This is truly a place where everyone is here because they want to be, not because they have to. People often ask me “Why alternative education? Isn’t that for the bad kids?” Too often this is the mindset of the general population and it is time for that to change. Alternative Education is just that, offering an alternative to doing things the way one would expect from a standard high school. Each of us brings along baggage that has been piled on our shoulders by life and all too frequently these are the reasons why students drop out or are unsuccessful in a traditional high school. Yes, many times these issues are brought on by bad choices, but there are other factors out in the world that can impede a student’s progress as well. Our job at Mt. Graham High School is to offer an adaptable environment that enables student’s to attend who may not fit the mold of the traditional high school. Here, students are able to work at their own pace in a much smaller environment for fewer hours per day. They still attend school for the number of hours required by the state; we have just cut out the social time so students can focus on their work. I live and lead by the motto: We are not born winners. We are not born losers. We are ALL born choosers. Our job is to prepare each and every student to make good choices. We look at the whole student and try to fill each ones personal “tool box” with the skills they will need to become productive citizens within our community. So, to answer the original questions, I chose alternative education so that ALL students are given the best chance possible for their own personal success. We all have our own mountains to climb but it is a whole lot easier to do when you know someone is at your side that has the tools to help your climb be a success. And who knows? You may even have fun while you’re at it! Have a great year! Lori VanScyoc
