May 2013
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that school is almost over for this year! I am encouraging our students to finish strong behaviorally and academically. We have the Turn Off the TV and Read final reward events coming up. We will have a K-2 Activity Day for those students who filled in 6 TV’s or more by April 19th. Grades 3-6 Water Day’s cutoff for 6 TV’s was April 19th. We also have a reward for 3-6 students in Park Day and Kindergarten Water Day. These rewards have to do with good behavior. I want to thank parents for partnering with us this school to help make our students safe, successful, and high achievers. Our staff, students, parents, and community help make Lafe Nelson School a great place to be.
School will resume on August 7th.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer and see you next year!

| Awarded!
Our very own LNS P.E. Teacher, Carole Brady, was awarded Arizona Rural Schools Teacher of the Year for Graham County in 2012. She takes her job very seriously with passion and conviction mixed with the joy of working with students and educators. Mrs. Brady always does her P.E teaching responsibilities to the best of her ability and still finds ways to consistently lend a helping hand to teachers and their classrooms. She offers extra time to teachers to help them with struggling students whether it’s reading practice or math practice. Sometimes she covers duties as well.
Mrs. Brady wants her impact to be made the most in the area of staff and students’ health. She has solicited funding, has organized, and implemented school-wide events such as our Fun Run where staff, students, and parents were invited to run along a lined route for fun. We had a high number of participation and the event even included another school. She also applied for a local grant to establish an after school physical education program called Fit Kids Club. This is a program for students who need and want extra physical activity, which has hooked many of our students and made them more physically fit. Mrs. Brady also runs and administrates our Walk the Dogs program where students earn charms for walking laps on our Walk The Dog field.
Mrs. Brady has also been involved heavily in our state physical education association (AzAHPERD). She has served as secretary and president and is well respected among her peers. She received Elementary Teacher of Year from this organization and has also been our local Rotary Club Teacher of Distinction. She works hard for students and our school and it is with honor and privilege that we recognize her.

Early Checkout – parents, we are requesting, if at all possible, to not check students out early. We work hard to educate our/your children and need students until the end of the day to get a full day of teaching in. Thank you!

| November 2012
Dear Parents,
We are beginning to enter the holiday season, which is personally one of my favorite times of the year. It is a time when family and friends gather and remember things we are thankful for. On Veterans Day we remember those who have served our country protecting our freedom. Schedules get busy and I want to encourage all students to make sure they are still keeping up on schoolwork because it is important too. Attendance is also important because students can’t learn what they need to if they aren’t in the classroom. The challenge is to find a balance of out-of-school activities and in-school activities for they are all important. The challenge is met by prioritizing the most important things and putting them first like family, friends, community, school, and even our professional responsibilities. This is my 8th year as principal here at LNS, but I have been part of the LNS family for 18 years. I enjoy working alongside those who walk through the doors here. May you enjoy all of your time in the upcoming months.
Sincerely,
A.J. Taylor Principal Lafe Nelson School

| October 2012
Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe the first quarter is already over! Parent Teacher conferences are October 24th and 25th. This time is set-aside for you to meet with teachers to discuss your child’s progress and receive your child’s report card. You should be receiving a note from your child with the day and time for your conference appointment. Our goal is to meet with every child’s parent, because we know that teacher/parent partnership is one of the most important ingredients for student success. School will be dismissed at 11:40pm on both of those days to allow time for conferences. I would like to thank each parent in advance for their efforts to meet with their child’s teacher. Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
A.J. Taylor Principal Lafe Nelson School

| September 2012
Dear Parents,
I can’t believe we’re already into the month of September! I enjoy being your principal at LNS and I appreciate all of the support I have received from parents and staff. Thank you! Our mission statement in Safford Schools is “All Students Will Be Contributing and Responsible Citizens”. This is the “filter” we run ideas through as we put things in place for our students. We are in our 8th year of placing an emphasis on character education. We believe students who grow up with strong character will be contributing and responsible citizens. There are also some great ways that you can help encourage your child’s reading progress; Read with them at home, have them read to you, and ask them to “retell” what they have read. It helps improve their reading comprehension, and opens the door for some really fun conversations! Check students’ understanding of math concepts and check their homework. Share opportunities to teach kids when math applies to real-life such as when you go to the store. I am proud to remind everyone that LNS has moved up a performance label from to a B school! Our staff, our/your students, and parents worked hard last year to help make this happen. As I walk through classrooms, I am excited and encouraged about what I see. I am fully convinced we have one of the best staffs, group of students, and helping parents in our valley.

Parent Internet Viewer and New Iphone App! If you didn’t know already, SUSD has a parent internet viewer that any students’ guardian with internet access can register for. Just go to our website and click on “Parent Access”. Directions will follow walking you through the steps to register. In addition, Pearson (the company who produces our student data software) has released a new Iphone app for free that allows guardians the same info on their Iphones. Cool!
