Walking The Dogs

Why should I walk?
Research continues to support the virtues of walking. According to the Cleveland Clinic, statistics over the past 20 years reveal the frequency of people walking for exercise has declined by 42%. Interestingly enough, during the same time period there has been a 40% increase in obesity among Americans. In 2004, the result of a research study was released in the Archives of Internal Medicine. In this study, researchers at Duke University reported 30 minutes per day of walking resulted in the prevention of weight gain. Study participants had no major changes in dietary habits; however, researchers documented participants lost weight, decreased waist size, and increased lean body mass. The study also noted those who jogged lost more weight and fat than those who walked.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded another research study, which found that 40.7% of children walked or biked to school in 1969; however, by 2001 that number had dropped to 12.9%. Researchers have continued to report the health benefits of walking. These benefits include decreasing the risk of heart attack, lowering blood pressure, lowering the risk of stroke, boosting good cholesterol, reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes and breast cancer, assisting in management of stress, and helping in weight management.

According to A Report to the President from the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Education, Fall 2000, physical inactivity has contributed to the 100% increase in childhood obesity since 1980 in the United States. With these startling statistics, the Walking the Dogs program was initiated to encourage children to become more physically active and to encourage the development of a healthy lifestyle at a young age. It is our hope this walking program will assist the federal government in meeting the goals of Healthy People 2010, the national health objectives of the decade.
